Electronic medical record (EMR) software replaces paper-based record-keeping with a secure electronic version of the patient record. EMRs improve clinician efficiency and patient care. A patient's entire medical record is immediately available for review, and clinicians can add and update information during a patient encounter. EMRs provide tools to make it easy for doctors and other caregivers to document care without limiting patient interaction.
Patients appreciate the access caregivers have to information because it improves the quality and convenience of care. For instance, in a health system that uses an EMR, when a patient is referred to a specialist, the doctor has access to medical records that may relate to this encounter without having to rely on a file being transported. This increases patients' confidence in the quality of care and eliminates redundant questions and tests.
For most clinicians, selecting an EMR is no longer optional. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act will make electronic records mandatory by 2014 for healthcare providers who collect Medicare or Medicaid funds. EMR software vendors are working to ensure that their products will help clinicians meet the "meaningful use" criteria needed to obtain reimbursement under HITECH.
