Implementing EMR software for a medical practice is becoming a common routine among the medical community. Going paperless and using EMR makes a medical practice eligible for significant ARRA incentives. EMR can be expensive to start up, and more and more advertisements for “Free EMR software” are beginning to pop up. Are these EMR really free?
It depends on how you look at free. Many of these vendors do offer a free EMR. However, some require a certain dollar amount spent per month for example on “optional” products. Others offer a very basic free EMR, and in order to get additional features, like PDA compatibility, scheduling and billing you must upgrade. Another consideration is the technical support offered; some companies do include limited technical support with their free EMR, while others charge for that service. This might be a good option for your medical practice, especially if there are limited funds to spend on an EMR. Research the vendor, and discuss possible upgrades in the future when funds are available to help make your choice.
