Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is a global standard for payment card security created by the payment card industry. PCI compliance solutions come in several forms. Entities with large payment volumes must use a Qualified Security Assessor (QSA), who is an independent auditor with training from the PCI Security Standards Council, to meet the standard. Smaller companies can attain PCI compliance by filling out the appropriate Self Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) and Attestation of Compliance. There are four different SAQs and which one a company uses depends on what kind of payment card transactions they do. Companies can ease the PCI DSS burden by eliminating any stored data they do not need and preventing data storage for future transactions. If card holder data must be stored, then storing it all in isolation, for example on a dedicated computer, means that only those isolated sites must be PCI compliant. There are also companies that offer Payment Card Industry Compliance solutions in the form of services or software that help an entity meet the PCI DSS requirements or reduce the scope of PCI compliance that the entity needs to meet.
